The Poplar Tree Road extension and bridge over Route 28 opened in November 2020, connecting Walney Road and Stringfellow Road on the east with Stonecroft Boulevard and Westfields Boulevard on the west side of Route 28. The new bridge includes a 10-foot-wide shared-use path that improves access to E.C. Lawrence Park for bicyclists and pedestrians.
The new bridge and E.C. Lawrence Park access road are among several Route 28 improvements that opened in fall 2020 as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
The bridge was built to accommodate possible future expansion of Poplar Tree Road. The bridge was partially funded as part of a $500 million concession fee payment to the Commonwealth of Virginia by I-66 Express Mobility Partners, dedicated to funding transportation projects benefitting the region.
