Overnight Lane Closures Begin Sunday Night on I-66 East from Dulles Connector Road to Fairfax Drive

FAIRFAX, Va. - Overnight lane closures will begin on or about Sunday, August 26, on eastbound I-66 and will continue for approximately two months, weather permitting. The lane closures will happen nightly from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. to allow crews to strengthen and repave the outside (right) shoulder of eastbound I-66 between the Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) and Fairfax Drive (Exit 71). Once completed, all I-66 eastbound travel lanes will be shifted toward the right side of the road and temporary traffic barriers will be installed on the left side of the roadway so that crews can begin widening work in the median. This work is part of the I-66 Inside the Beltway Eastbound Widening Project.

Construction Ramps Up this Month on I-66 Outside the Beltway

PLANS TO EXTEND I-395 EXPRESS LANES LAUNCHED; Virginia Secretary of Transportation and project leaders kick off project to provide congestion relief and transit improvements; Network of express lanes expected to help unlock gridlock in Northern Virginia

FAIRFAX - Virginia Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne today launched the McAuliffe Administration's plans to extend the northern section of the I-395 Express Lanes, providing expansion of a managed lanes network that provides faster and more reliable travel, and new choices to Northern Virginia - one of the most congested regions in the country. The 395 Express Lanes extension, which involves expanding and converting two high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes to three express lanes from north of Edsall Road to Eads Street near the Pentagon, will help ease bottlenecks that occur where the existing 395 Express Lanes end. Improvements to the commuter-heavy Eads Street interchange and transit improvements on the entire I-395/I-95 Corridor are other key benefits of the project. This eight-mile extension is the latest addition to a growing network of express lanes aimed at unlocking gridlock in Northern Virginia.

Revised Tier 2 Environmental Assessment for I-66 Outside the Beltway Project Now Available for Public Review and Input Public comments due February 4, 2016

FAIRFAX - The Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Tier 2 Revised Environmental Assessment (EA) is now available for public review and comment until February 4, 2016. The Revised EA is based upon the Preferred Alternative design concept for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project.

The project consists of two express lanes alongside three regular lanes in each direction, with space in the median for future transit; dedicated express lanes access points; safety and operational improvements at key interchanges throughout the corridor; new transit services, such as new and expanded park and ride lots and bus service; and corridor-wide bikeway, trail and sidewalk improvements.

The Revised EA may be viewed on the project website at Transform66.org.

VDOT Commissioner Selects Toll Concession Procurement to Deliver I-66 Outside the Beltway Improvements in Northern Virginia

ALEXANDRIA – The project to move more people and provide new travel choices on I-66 outside the Beltway in Northern Virginia will be privately financed under a partnership between the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the private sector under the Public Private Transportation Act.   VDOT Commissioner Charlie Kilpatrick informed the Commonwealth Transportation Board today that it’s in the public’s best interest for the private sector to finance, design, build, maintain and operate the project with oversight from the commonwealth.

RICHMOND – The commonwealth will further explore procuring the $2.1 billion I-66 Outside the Beltway project under the Public Private Transportation Act (P3 program).  This allows private-sector teams to submit their qualifications, including how they would take on the risk of delivering the project.   Their information will be compared to a publicly-financed procurement, with the goal of selecting the right procurement that will bring the most benefit to the public.

Commonwealth Outlines Process for Transform66: Outside the Beltway Procurement

Today, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Commissioner Charlie Kilpatrick briefed the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) on the process to determine a preferred procurement option for the Transform66: Outside the Beltway project. At this point, the Commissioner outlined that procuring the project as a design-build public finance or as a public-private partnership both remain viable options.

VDOT, DRPT Seek Public Input on I-66 Outside the Beltway Project Public hearings scheduled for environmental assessment and latest design concepts with reduced impacts

FAIRFAX - At four upcoming public hearings, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) will ask for input on the Tier 2 Environmental Assessment for improvements on Interstate 66 outside the Capital Beltway, as well as revised design concepts that have reduced potential residential relocations by half. This information will be presented at hearings scheduled on May 27 and 28, and June 2 and 3.
