FAIRFAX – Temporary ramp closures are scheduled to occur during the overnight hours at the following I-66 interchanges as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

For crews to safely perform this work, the ramp will be closed beginning at 10 p.m. tonight, Friday, October 28, continuously through 6 p.m. Saturday, October 29. The ramp will also be closed nightly Sunday, October 30, through Friday, November 4, from 8 p.m. until noon the following day. This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
READ FULL RELEASEFAIRFAX – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and I-66 Express Mobility Partners (EMP), the Commonwealth’s private partner and operator of the new 66 Express Lanes, announced today that the remaining eastern section of the new 66 Express Lanes is on track to open before the end of 2022, with opening potentially to occur as early as mid-to-late November. This remaining section of express lanes spans approximately 13 miles from Route 28 in Centreville to I-495 (Capital Beltway). Drivers are advised that there will be continued daytime and nighttime construction, and traffic shifts throughout this stretch of I-66, as crews complete final preparations for the remaining express lanes. All work is weather dependent, and weather could affect the final schedule for opening the express lanes. Specific opening date(s) and details will be announced in the coming weeks as final work progresses.
READ FULL RELEASEFAIRFAX – Beginning during the early morning hours on or about Monday, October 31, the first of two roundabouts on Nutley Street at I-66 will open to traffic as part of the redesigned I-66/Nutley Street Interchange. Drivers traveling to northbound Nutley Street from I-66 East will enter and proceed around the roundabout to go north on Nutley Street. Drivers traveling northbound and southbound on Nutley Street will use the roundabout to continue on Nutley Street. This traffic pattern change will allow for the removal of the temporary traffic signal control at the intersection of Nutley Street and the ramp from eastbound I-66. A second roundabout, on the north side of I-66, is anticipated to open to traffic later this year.

Beginning Wednesday morning, October 26, through Friday morning, October 28, the ramp from Route 123 South to I-66 East will be closed. The ramp from northbound Route 123 to I-66 East will then close Friday morning and reopen during the early morning hours Saturday, October 29. During these closures traffic will access I-66 East using the new ramp to the future eastbound 66 Express Lanes.

Both ramps will reopen later this year as full-time, Express Lanes-only ramps. The ramps will no longer provide access to and from the general purpose lanes on I-66.

Traffic will be directed to continue farther east, stay to the left and use the left-most left turn lane to make a U-turn at the traffic signal at Waples Mill Road onto Route 50 West, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.
