Governor Glenn Youngkin Joins Virginia Officials and Partners at Ribbon Cutting to Mark Opening of I-66 Express Lanes

FAIRFAX, VA – Governor Glenn Youngkin joined Virginia Secretary of Transportation W. Sheppard Miller III, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and other federal, state and local officials, as well as the Commonwealth’s private partner, I-66 Express Mobility Partners (a consortium of private developers Cintra, Meridiam, and APG), and the design-build contractor, FAM Construction (a joint venture between Ferrovial Construction and Allan Myers), today at a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially recognize the opening of the 66 Express Lanes Outside the Beltway. The final section of new lanes opened on Tuesday, Nov. 22, providing a total of 22.5 miles of express lanes on Interstate 66 from I-495 (the Capital Beltway) to Route 29 in Gainesville.

I-66 Express Lanes Now Fully Open Between Route 29 in Gainesville and I-495

FAIRFAX – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and I-66 Express Mobility Partners (EMP), the Commonwealth’s private partner and operator of the new 66 Express Lanes outside the Beltway, announced today that the full 66 Express Lanes corridor from Route 29 in Gainesville to I-495 (Capital Beltway) is open ahead of schedule. The final 13-mile section on I-66 East between Route 28 in Centreville and I-495 opened around 11 a.m. today, Nov. 22.

Final Section of I-66 Express Lanes Scheduled to Open Tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 22

FAIRFAX – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and I-66 Express Mobility Partners (EMP), the Commonwealth’s private partner and operator of the new 66 Express Lanes outside the Beltway, announced today that the eastbound direction of the new 66 Express Lanes from Route 28 in Centreville to I-495 (Capital Beltway) is on track to open on Tuesday, Nov. 22. The westbound direction of this same 13-mile section of express lanes opened on Saturday, Nov. 19. Drivers should use caution when traveling on I-66, as traffic becomes acclimated to the new express lanes and ramps.

Overnight Ramp Closures at Multiple I-66 Interchanges November 20-22 for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project

FAIRFAX – Temporary ramp closures are scheduled to occur during the overnight hours at the following I-66 interchanges as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Westbound I-66 Express Lanes Between I-495 and Route 28 Remain on Schedule to Open This Saturday, Nov. 19

FAIRFAX – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and I-66 Express Mobility Partners (EMP), the Commonwealth’s private partner and operator of the new 66 Express Lanes outside the Beltway, announced today that the westbound direction of the new 66 Express Lanes from I-495 (Capital Beltway) to Route 28 in Centreville remains on schedule to open on or about this Saturday, Nov. 19. The eastbound direction of this same 13-mile section of express lanes is expected to open by the end of November and could open as early as next Tuesday, Nov. 22, depending on weather and other factors. Updates will be provided to the public as final construction progresses.

Overnight Ramp Closures at Multiple I-66 Interchanges November 13-18 for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project

Access from the 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West Switching to New Ramp on or about Monday, November 14

UPDATE (11/14/2022): This work has been rescheduled. The switch to the new 66 Express Lanes flyover ramp will begin the morning of November 16.

FAIRFAX – Drivers traveling from the northbound 495 Express Lanes to the I-66 West general-purpose lanes will begin using a new exit starting Monday morning, Nov. 14. The new ramp is located on the right approximately 500 feet north of (after) the current ramp and just prior to the exit to I-66 East. This ramp is a permanent feature of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Extended Closure of Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South This Weekend, November 11-14, During Overnight and Daytime Hours

This work has been cancelled for the weekend of Nov. 11-14 due to inclimate weather. 

FAIRFAX – Reconstruction and paving of the permanent ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South will continue this weekend, Nov. 11-14. For crews to safely perform the work, the ramp will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, continuously through noon Monday, Nov. 14. This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Access From I-66 East to 495 Express Lanes to Switch to New 66 Express Lanes Flyover Ramp Beginning on or about Tuesday, November 15

FAIRFAX – Drivers traveling from the I-66 East general-purpose lanes to the 495 Express Lanes will begin using a new 66 Express Lanes flyover ramp starting Tuesday morning, Nov. 15. The new ramp is located on the right side of I-66 East just after the Cedar Lane Bridge over I-66 and about one-mile after (east of) the I-66/Nutley Street Interchange. This ramp is a permanent feature of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project and will be the only way for motorists to reach the 495 Express Lanes from the I-66 East general-purpose lanes.

Westbound I-66 Express Lanes Between I-495 and Route 28 Planned to Open On or About November 19

FAIRFAX – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and I-66 Express Mobility Partners (EMP), the Commonwealth’s private partner and operator of the new 66 Express Lanes, announced today that the westbound direction of the new 66 Express Lanes from I-495 (Capital Beltway) to Route 28 in Centreville is scheduled to open on or about Saturday, Nov. 19. The eastbound direction of this same 13-mile section of express lanes is expected to open by the end of November. Updates will be provided to the public as final construction progresses. All work is weather dependent, and inclement conditions could affect the final opening schedule.

Loop Ramp from Braddock Road/Walney Road to I-66 East Reopening to Traffic on or about Monday, November 7

FAIRFAX – The right-side loop ramp from Braddock Road/Walney Road to I-66 East is scheduled to reopen on or about Monday, November 7, as part of the permanent traffic pattern at the I-66/Route 28 Interchange. This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

I-66 West Ramp to Stringfellow Road to Close for Express Lanes Construction On or About Thursday, November 10

FAIRFAX – Crews will close the ramp from I-66 West to Stringfellow Road during the evening hours Thursday, November 10, for continued construction related to the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The ramp will reopen later this year as a full-time, Express Lanes-only ramp. The ramp will no longer provide access from the I-66 general-purpose lanes to Stringfellow Road.

Daytime Closures of Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South Planned Saturday, November 5, and Next Week, November 9 and 10

FAIRFAX – Continued reconstruction and paving of the permanent ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South will require closure of the ramp during daytime hours tomorrow, Saturday, November 5; Wednesday, November 9; and Thursday, November 10. The ramp will also be closed for an extended overnight period on Sunday, November 6, beginning at 8 p.m. until noon the following day. This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
