FAIRFAX – The ramp from Route 50 East to I-66 West is scheduled to be closed next weekend beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, October 7, continuously through 5 a.m. Monday, October 10, for ramp reconstruction. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east, stay to the left and use the left-most left turn lane to make a U-turn at the traffic signal at Waples Mill Road onto Route 50 West, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

READ FULL RELEASEFAIRFAX - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and I-66 Express Mobility Partners (EMP), the Commonwealth’s private partner and operator of the new 66 Express Lanes, announced today that tolling and high occupancy vehicle (HOV) rules will begin this Saturday, Sept. 24, on the recently opened western section of 66 Express Lanes. Motorists will be able to use this nine-mile stretch of new Express Lanes from Route 29 in Gainesville to Route 28 in Centreville by paying a toll or can ride toll-free if traveling as an HOV with two or more people.

FAIRFAX – Random Hills Road is scheduled to be closed at Monument Drive during the overnight hours Wednesday, September 14, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Traffic will be detoured around the closure via Government Center Parkway and Post Forest Drive. The closure is needed for crews to install overhead bridge beams as part of the widening of the Monument Drive Bridge over I-66 for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Sheppard Miller III and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) officials joined federal, state and local officials, the Commonwealth’s private partner, I-66 Express Mobility Partners (EMP) (a consortium of private developers Cintra, Meridiam, and APG), and the design-build contractor, FAM Construction (a joint venture between Ferrovial Construction and Allan Myers), at a ceremony to officially recognize the early opening of the western section of the new 66 Express Lanes Outside the Beltway. The nine-mile western segment, which spans Route 29 in Gainesville to Route 28 in Centreville, opened ahead of schedule on Saturday, Sept. 10. This westernmost portion is the first section of the 66 Express Lanes to open, and will provide early benefits to I-66 travelers including added capacity, smoother pavement, better travel reliability and new connections. The remaining 13 miles of new express lanes along I-66 between Route 28 and I-495 (the Capital Beltway) are scheduled to open in December 2022.

Initially, this nine-mile segment from Route 29 in Gainesville to Route 28 in Centreville will be open to all traffic toll-free, so that motorists can benefit from the additional capacity, become familiar with the new express lanes and access points, and open an E-ZPass account, if needed. After the initial opening period, tolling and HOV rules are anticipated to be in place by the end of the month, with information displayed on roadway signs.
