I-66 at Route 29 (Lee Highway) in Gainesville

MAIN ACTIVITIES
Travel lanes have been shifted to the outside portion of the roadway to allow construction of new express lanes in the center. A new ramp is being built between University Boulevard and I-66 that will connect the new park-and-ride lot with the future Express Lanes. The first 1,000 spaces of the lot opened in 2019. An additional 1,000 spaces and access from Route 29 are being built.

MAIN ACTIVITIES
Travel lanes have been shifted to the outside portion of the roadway to allow construction of new express lanes in the center. The new Balls Ford Park and Ride Lot is being built with a ramp connection to the express lanes. A new bridge and ramp connection have been built for travel from I-66 West to Route 234 Business South.

MAIN ACTIVITIES
New bridges and ramp connections are being constructed between Route 28 and I-66 general purpose and express lanes. A new bridge has opened connecting Braddock and Walney Roads and providing expanded access to Route 28 and I-66. A new E.C. Lawrence Park access road has been built. The I-66 bridges over Route 29 (Lee Highway) are being demolished and rebuilt to accommodate future Express Lanes and provide room for future mass transit and future widening of Route 29.

Wednesday night, September 29, through Friday night, October 1: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed farther south to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North, and then follow signs to I-66 East.

I-66 at Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)

MAIN ACTIVITIES
I-66 bridges over Fairfax County Parkway and Stringfellow Road are being expanded to make room for express lanes and shifted general purpose lanes. The Monument Drive Bridge over I-66 will be modified to add express lanes ramps to and from the west. Retaining walls and noise walls are being completed across much of this part of the corridor.

The ramps will be closed. Traffic from both directions will be directed to Route 50 East (Route 286 South traffic will be notified prior to the closure/Route 286 North traffic will continue farther north), travel about two miles then follow signs to I-66 East.

Two lanes will be closed for re-opening of the left (HOV) lane.

MAIN ACTIVITIES
New Route 50 bridges over I-66 are being built as express lanes access is added to and from the east. The Waples Mill Road bridge is being rebuilt with improved bike and pedestrian access to include shared-use path access through the interchange. Retaining walls and noise walls are also being constructed.

The ramps will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto Route 123 North, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 50 West or Route 50 East. (Note: These closures will not occur on night(s) when the detour routes are not available due to other closures.)

The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to exit prior to the closure to Route 50 East, stay to the left and use the left-most left turn lane to make a U-turn at the traffic signal at Waples Mill Road onto Route 50 West.

Wednesday, September 29: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. (Thursday, September 30, will be used as backup.)
Westbound I-66 will be reduced to a single travel from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. for a traffic shift. Between 1 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., westbound I-66 will be closed at Route 50. All I-66 West traffic will be directed to exit the interstate to Route 50 West, continue to West Ox Road South, stay to the right to Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West. One lane of westbound I-66 will reopen at 4:30 a.m., and two lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. All lanes will reopen by 7 a.m.

The Nutley Street Interchange has been temporarily reconfigured to allow for the construction of a ”double roundabout” where Nutley Street crosses I-66. The Vaden Drive and Cedar Lane bridges over I-66 have been demolished and rebuilt. Construction of noise walls and shared-use path continues.

Ramp from I-66 East to Nutley Street North/South
Friday night, September 24: Midnight to 4 a.m.
Tuesday night, September 28, through Friday night, October 1: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured farther east to I-495 North, travel north to Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) West, stay to the right to I-495 South, exit to I-66 West, then follow signs to Nutley Street North or South.

Tuesday night, September 28, through Friday night, October 1: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed farther west to the exit to Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Station, stay to the right onto Country Creek Road, continue onto Virginia Center Boulevard, at the traffic signal turn left to Nutley Street North or turn right to Nutley Street South.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, October 1, continuously through 5 a.m. Monday, October 4
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed farther north, stay to the left and make a U-turn from the left-most left turn lane at the intersection with Virginia Center Boulevard, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.

Nutley Street North and South over I-66
Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, October 1, continuously through 5 a.m. Monday, October 4
Nutley Street will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction for a traffic shift on the bridge over I-66.

I-66 at I-495/Capital Beltway

MAIN ACTIVITIES
Bridge piers, abutments, and deck are being built for new ramps that will connect the new express lanes with I-495 general purpose and express lanes. A new Gallows Road bridge is being constructed in two phases, which will require demolition of the old bridge. Construction of noise walls and shared-use path continues.

Monday, September 27, and Tuesday, September 28: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work on Monday night. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during the overnight hours. On Tuesday night two lanes will be closed.
