I-66 at Route 29 (Lee Highway) in Gainesville

MAIN ACTIVITIES
Travel lanes have been shifted to the outside portion of the roadway to allow space for the new express lanes in the center. A new ramp has been built between University Boulevard and I-66 that connects the new park-and-ride lot with the express lanes. The first 1,000 spaces of the lot opened in 2019. Additional spaces will be opened in 2023 to bring the total to 2,000.

66 Express Lanes East and West from Route 29 Gainesville to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road)
Tuesday, September 26: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The express lanes will be closed for punch list work and sign inspections. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

I-66 at Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)

MAIN ACTIVITIES
Travel lanes have been shifted to the outside portion of the roadway to allow space for the new express lanes in the center. The new Balls Ford Park and Ride Lot opened in Sept. 2022, and will have a total of 1,300 spaces available by summer 2023. The lot connects directly to the express lanes. A new bridge and ramp connection have been built for travel from I-66 West to Route 234 Business South.

I-66 at Route 28/Sully Road

MAIN ACTIVITIES
New bridges and ramp connections have been constructed between Route 28 and the I-66 general-purpose and express lanes. A new bridge connects Braddock and Walney Roads and provides expanded access to Route 28 and I-66. A new E.C. Lawrence Park access road has been built. The I-66 bridges over Route 29 (Lee Highway) have been rebuilt to accommodate the express lanes and provide room for future mass transit and future widening of Route 29.

The ramps will be closed for bridge work. Traffic will be detoured to Route 28 South, exit to Route 29 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North. Drivers heading to Braddock Road/Walney Road will stay left and follow signs to that exit.

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South
Tuesday, September 26: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for bridge work. Traffic will be detoured farther west to Route 29 Centreville, stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto Route 29 North, then follow signs to Route 28 South.

Tuesday, September 26: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for punch list work. Traffic will be detoured farther south to Route 29 North, stay right to Route 28 North, then follow signs to I-66 East.

I-66 at Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)

MAIN ACTIVITIES
I-66 bridges over Route 286 and Stringfellow Road have been expanded to make room for the express lanes and the shifted general-purpose lanes. The Monument Drive Bridge over I-66 has been modified to add express lanes ramps to and from the west. Retaining walls and noise walls have been completed across much of this part of the corridor.

I-66 at Route 50

MAIN ACTIVITIES
New Route 50 bridges over I-66 have been built as express lanes access has been added to and from the east. The Waples Mill Road Bridge was rebuilt with improved bike and pedestrian access to include shared-use path access through the interchange. Retaining walls and noise walls were also constructed as part of the project.

Monday, September 25, and Tuesday, September 26: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed both nights for installation of light poles. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east, stay to the left and use the left-most left turn lane to make a U-turn at the traffic signal at Waples Mill Road onto Route 50 West, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.

Monday, September 25, and Thursday, September 28: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The ramp will be closed both nights for bridge work. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road), stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto Route 123 North, stay to the right to I-66 West, and then follow signs to Route 50 West.

New bridges have been built and exit ramps moved and/or added to accommodate the new express lanes at the Route 123 Interchange. Box culverts have been built in the interchange for the shared-use path. Retaining walls and noise walls were also constructed as part of the project.

The Nutley Street Interchange has been temporarily reconfigured to allow for the construction of a "double roundabout" where Nutley Street crosses I-66. The Vaden Drive and Cedar Lane bridges over I-66 have been demolished and rebuilt. Construction of noise walls and shared-use path continues.

MAIN ACTIVITIES
New bridges and ramps connect the 66 Express Lanes with the I-495 general-purpose and 495 Express Lanes. A new Gallows Road Bridge has been constructed, while construction of noise walls and a shared-use path continues.

The ramp will be closed on multiple nights for drainage work. Traffic will be directed to continue north to Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) West, stay to the right to I-495 South, then follow signs to I-66 West.
