I-66 at Route 29 (Lee Highway) in Gainesville

MAIN ACTIVITIES
Travel lanes have been shifted to the outside portion of the roadway to allow construction of new express lanes in the center. A new ramp is being built between University Boulevard and I-66 that will connect the new park-and-ride lot with the future Express Lanes. The first 1,000 spaces of the lot opened in 2019. An additional 1,000 spaces and access from Route 29 are being built.

I-66 East from east of Route 234 Bypass to Groveton Road
Wednesday, December 8: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for cantilever installation. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during the overnight hours.

Ramp from Route 234 Bypass (Prince William Parkway) North to I-66 East
Wednesday night, December 8: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to I-66 West, exit to Route 29 North, turn left at the traffic signal on to Route 29 South, then stay to the right to I-66 East.

University Boulevard North and South from I-66 to Route 29 Gainesville
Monday, December 6, through Friday, December 10: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
One lane will be closed for roadway construction.

Route 29 North and South from University Boulevard to Heathcote Boulevard
Monday, December 6, through Friday, December 10: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
One lane will be closed for roadway construction.

I-66 East and West between Route 15 and Compton Road
Daily through Wednesday, December 22: Eastbound 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m./Westbound 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
One lane will be closed for lighting and utility work.

I-66 at Route 234 Business (Sudley Road)

MAIN ACTIVITIES
Travel lanes have been shifted to the outside portion of the roadway to allow construction of new express lanes in the center. The new Balls Ford Park and Ride Lot is being built with a ramp connection to the express lanes. A new bridge and ramp connection have been built for travel from I-66 West to Route 234 Business South.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS
I-66 East and West between Route 15 and Compton Road
Daily through Wednesday, December 22: Eastbound 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m./Westbound 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
One lane will be closed for lighting and utility work.

I-66 at Route 28/Sully Road

MAIN ACTIVITIES
New bridges and ramp connections are being constructed between Route 28 and I-66 general purpose and express lanes. A new bridge has opened connecting Braddock and Walney Roads and providing expanded access to Route 28 and I-66. A new E.C. Lawrence Park access road has been built. The I-66 bridges over Route 29 (Lee Highway) are being demolished and rebuilt to accommodate future Express Lanes and provide room for future mass transit and future widening of Route 29.

I-66 East from east of Route 29 Centreville to Route 28
Tuesday, December 7, through Friday, December 10: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for gantry installation. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during the overnight hours.

I-66 East from Compton Road to Route 29 Centreville
Wednesday, December 8: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for a traffic shift.

I-66 West over Compton Road
Beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, December 10, continuously through 9 a.m. Sunday, December 12
One lane will be closed for bridge work.

I-66 East and West between Route 15 and Compton Road
Daily through Wednesday, December 22: Eastbound 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m./Westbound 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
One lane will be closed for lighting and utility work.

I-66 East near Route 28
Friday, December 10, and Saturday, December 11: 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for a traffic shift.

Ramp from Route 28 North to I-66 East
Friday, December 10, and Saturday, December 11: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to Route 29 South (prior to the closed ramp), stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto Route 29 South, continue for about one mile and follow signs to I-66 East.

Friday, December 10, and Saturday, December 11: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed farther south to Route 29 (Lee Highway) South, continue for about one mile, and follow signs to I-66 East.

I-66 West near Route 28
Friday, December 10, and Saturday, December 11: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for demolition of the old Route 28 bridge abutment.

The right lane of Route 28 North at I-66 will remain closed to provide an extended merge lane for the ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North.

I-66 at Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway)

MAIN ACTIVITIES
I-66 bridges over Fairfax County Parkway and Stringfellow Road are being expanded to make room for express lanes and shifted general purpose lanes. The Monument Drive Bridge over I-66 will be modified to add express lanes ramps to and from the west. Retaining walls and noise walls are being completed across much of this part of the corridor.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS
No significant traffic impacts scheduled

I-66 at Route 50

MAIN ACTIVITIES
New Route 50 bridges over I-66 are being built as express lanes access is added to and from the east. The Waples Mill Road bridge is being rebuilt with improved bike and pedestrian access to include shared-use path access through the interchange. Retaining walls and noise walls are also being constructed.

Ramp from Route 50 West to I-66 West
Monday night, December 6, through Friday night, December 10: Midnight to 4 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue farther west, exit to Route 608 (West Ox Road) South, stay to the right to Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.

Ramp from Route 50 West to Fair Oaks Mall
Thursday, December 9: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The ramp will be closed. Drivers will be directed farther west to West Ox Road South, stay to the right to Route 50 East, then turn right into one of the two entrances into the Fair Oaks Mall property.

I-66 at Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road)

MAIN ACTIVITIES
Multiple traffic pattern changes continue to occur as new bridges are built and exit ramps are moved and added to accommodate new express lanes at the Route 123 Interchange. Box culverts have been built in the interchange for the future shared-use path. Retaining walls and noise walls are also being constructed.

I-66 at Nutley Street

MAIN ACTIVITIES
The Nutley Street Interchange has been temporarily reconfigured to allow for the construction of a ”double roundabout” where Nutley Street crosses I-66. The Vaden Drive and Cedar Lane bridges over I-66 have been demolished and rebuilt. Construction of noise walls and shared-use path continues.

Vaden Drive North and South over I-66
Monday, December 6, through Friday, December 10: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
One lane in each direction will be closed for a concrete pour. Two-way way traffic will run on the northbound lanes over I-66.

I-66 East from Nutley Street to Gallows Road
Monday, December 6, through Thursday, December 9: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Two lanes will be closed for sound wall installation.

I-66 at I-495/Capital Beltway

MAIN ACTIVITIES
Bridge piers, abutments, and deck are being built for new ramps that will connect the new express lanes with I-495 general purpose and express lanes. A new Gallows Road bridge is being constructed in two phases, which will require demolition of the old bridge. Construction of noise walls and shared-use path continues.

Sunday, December 5, through Thursday, December 9: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, December 10, and Saturday, December 11: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed Sunday through Friday nights for overhead bridge demolition. On Saturday night, two lanes will be closed. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes Sunday through Thursday nights between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. nightly, and Friday night between 11:30 p.m. at 5:30 a.m.

Sunday, December 5, through Thursday, December 9: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, December 10: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The ramp will be closed for overhead bridge demolition at Gallows Road. Overhead variable message boards will direct traffic to an alternate route.

Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West
Sunday, December 5, through Thursday, December 9: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, December 10, and Saturday, December 11: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The ramp will be reduced to one travel lane for overhead bridge demolition at Gallows Road. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. weekdays, and by 7 a.m. weekends.

495 Express Lanes North from Robinson Terminal (the beginning of the Express Lanes) to I-66
Monday, December 6, through Friday, November 10: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The northbound Express Lanes will be closed nightly. Overhead variable message boards will direct traffic to alternate routes.

495 Express Lanes South at I-66
Sunday, December 5, through Thursday, December 9: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
One lane will be closed for overhead bridge work.

Friday, December 10: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Saturday, December 11: 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to take the left exit to the 495 Express Lanes North. Drivers will not be charged for using the Express Lanes for the detour.

I-495 North approaching I-66
Friday, December 10: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Saturday, December 11: 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed for bridge beam installation at the I-66/I-495 Interchange. Around 10 p.m., all northbound I-495 traffic will be diverted into the 495 Express Lanes North approaching I-66. Drivers will not be charged for using the Express Lanes for the detour.

495 Express Lanes North from Robinson Terminal (the beginning of the Express Lanes) to I-66
Friday, December 10: 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Saturday, December 11: 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.
The northbound Express Lanes will be reduced to a single travel lane. Drivers will not be charged for using the Express Lanes north of I-66.

Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West
Wednesday, December 8, and Thursday, December 9: 10:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue north to Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) West, stay to the right to I-495 South, then follow signs to I-66 West.

Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 East
Wednesday, December 8, and Thursday, December 9: 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
The ramp will be closed. Traffic will be directed to continue north to Route 7 East, travel about one mile, then follow signs to I-66 East.
